Welcome back mangakas! Today on How to Draw Manga our tutorial is on Mei Terumi the fifth Mizukage in the Naruto manga series. As leader of her town all of the political and military decisions that affect the village are hers to make. And they are backed up with some vicious fighting skills and her ability to use elemental spells and summon elemental powers to aid her in defeating her town’s enemies. Although her powers are enormous, she usually has a kind word for her subjects and attendants. But get on her bad side … and there’s no telling what kind of damage she might do. If you’re interested in learning how to draw other Naruto characters click on the Naruto tag in the tag cloud on the right side of the page to check out all of our Naruto drawing tutorials. Well, let’s get our pencils and eraser ready as we begin our Mizukage tutorial.
Step 1
Step 1: Returning mangakas will already know that the blue lines you see in this tutorial are all construction lines and we will be erasing them in later steps, so be sure to draw the blue lines you see in pencil so they can be easily erased or lightened in later steps. We’ll save our black pen for our final lines which you’ll see in black later at the end of the tutorial.
Let’s begin by drawing a circle in the center of our paper for our head shape. It shouldn’t be too large as we have a large amount of hair to put on top.
Step 2
Step 2: Next we’ll draw our center and eye lines to help us locate Mizukage’s features. The center line should split the head circle in two and extend down to be nearly twice as long as the head shape itself. The eye line is horizontal and about a third of the way up the head circle.
Step 3
Step 3: Great, now that we’ve got our construction lines in place we’ll start working on some of her features. In this step we’ll work on her jaw. We should draw two lines curving downward to meet almost in a point below the head shape and on the center line. The jaw line on the right should touch the point where the head circle and eye line meet while the jaw line on the left touches the head circle just below this point.
Step 4
Step 4: Alright, in step 4 we need to draw another circle around the head shape as an outline of the Mizukage’s hair, it should resemble a kind of halo around the head.
Step 5
Step 5: Now that we’ve got the hair shape in place we’re going to work on some details in the next few steps. In our finished drawing Mizukage stares out at us with only one eye, the other is covered by a lock of her bangs that hangs down over her face. So here, we only need to draw a single eye on the right. You might begin with the mark near the point where the eye and center lines meet in the middle of her face. Then move on to draw the eye shape, noticing that it doesn’t close completely on the left. Then add a curving line above for her eyelid and a small dash above that to mark her eyebrow. Then moving lower we’ll draw two small upward dashes where the halo circle meets the center line suggesting her nose and nostrils. And just below that we’ll add her mouth. Once you have everything in place, we’ll move on to the next step.
Step 6
Step 6: As many of you already know, hair in manga is really the make or break of the character and Mizukage is no different. We’ll be working a lot on her hair in this tutorial so be prepared 🙂 In this step we need to add three irregular shapes to her hair, but before that we can add an almost complete circle inside her eye. Once you’ve got that you might want to start with the lock of hair on the right as it starts on the center line, then add the center piece to the hair which touches the lock on the right just above the eye, and, lastly, the lock on the left. Notice the lock on the left covers the entire side of her face on the left and the point is actually under her eye on the right (overlapping 3D principle). Give it a shot and feel free to erase to redo any mistakes you might have made. Nothing in pencil is set in stone.
Step 7
Step 7: After that step, we’ll do an easy one here to help you relax. We just need to draw two lines straight down from the outer hair circle that starts on either side just above the eye line. The line on the right should be longer than that on the left.
Step 8
Step 8: You might want to lighten the lines we drew in the last step as they won’t form part of Mizukage’s hair but are there as guides. In this step, mangakas, we need to add lines for the long lower part of her hair. Let’s start on the right where we can draw a tent shape from the point where the line we drew in the previous step touches the eye line and then we’ll add a second curving line under her eye. On the left we should draw two parallel curving lines and a smaller line coming off the outer parallel line. Just under her chin we need to add a small line connecting her chin to her hair as a neck line.
Step 9
Step 9: Well, the Mizukage is really starting to come together. In this step, we’ll begin working on her bun on top of her head. We just need to add three straight lines at the top of her head with the center line slightly longer than the two outer lines.
Step 10
Step 10: Now that we’ve got that, we’ll can draw the band that holds her bun up. Notice that the bottom of the lines where they touch the hair are curved out slightly.
Step 11
Step 11: On top of the shape we drew in the last step we’ll add a sort of muffin top. It’s not perfectly shaped with the right side slightly more elongated than on the left.
Step 12
Step 12: Great, now we’ll draw a kind of half crescent in the middle of the “muffin” shape we drew in the previous step.
Step 13
Step 13: Super, well guys we’ve got to return to her hair for a while again and do some detailing. Always remember that if you don’t like what you’ve done be patient and erase and try it again. No sweat! Here, we need to draw some lines to give depth and layers to her hair. I’ve got about 12 lines in total to add to her hair. Be aware that the lines on the lock of hair that sweeps across Mizukage’s head the lines are thinner than the others, so don’t press too hard on your pencil there, we want thin lines. Before moving on, add a dot in the eye for her pupil.
Step 14
Step 14: Again, some more faint thin lines in this step to suggest more layers to her hair. If you plan on shading or colorizing Mizukage as we will do in later steps these lines can also help to guide your shading. One line that looks like a scar across her cheek on the left is important for shading in later steps so be sure to add it.
Step 15
Step 15: Ok, mangakas, the small thin lines you see in this step are to help us with shadowing and shading in future steps. A line runs just above and traces the jaw. There’s also a thin line between her hair at the bottom for the bottom of her neck. We can put a thin upside down triangle around her nose, a small shape on the right of her lips. Lastly, we’ll draw a sperm like shape in her eye with a squiggly tail and a circle in the corner on the right and a crescent like shape around the inner corner of her eye also for shading.
Step 16
Step 16: Well, now we’ve got all the construction lines we need, so we can get out our eraser and lighten all of the lines we’ve made so far. Then taking our black pen we can trace our final lines in black. Be sure not to press too hard on the pen as we want even our final lines to be thin. In the next few steps we’ll be shading and coloring.
Step 17
Step 17: In this step we can lightly shade in all of her hair, you can use a slightly darker pencil to do so.
Step 18
Step 18: Once we have Mizukage’s hair shaded, we can begin to fill in the shadows on her face in a slightly lighter color. These shadows should be lighter than her hair. We’ll fill in the band on the top of her hair and almost her whole neck including the lower part of the jaw and the small triangle area around her nose. Then we’ll add some shading to the iris of her eye leaving the circle in the corner empty, and fill in the crescent shape. Lastly, we’ll do her bottom lip in the same tone.
Step 19
Step 19: Now, using either a darker pencil or pressing harder to get a darker shade we should shade in her upper lip and the upper half of the iris of her eye.
Step 20
Step 20: As the last step, we should shade the lower portions of her hair and the two locks on the top of her head darker than the rest. Have you got it?
Step 21
Step 21: Great work mangakas!! Take a look at the powerful Mizukage and watch out for her Lava spell. If your goal is to become a great mangaka make sure to draw Mizukage again from memory. Then compare the final drawing with the original and correct any mistakes you might have made. Try once again from memory. This is the best way to build a huge library of shapes that you can use in the future for your own manga characters.
Draw with passion! -_^
